The objective of this research is to analyze the relationship between public policies and strategies for the sustainable development of SMEs in Ecuador, with details on the accessibility of credit for these companies. The research is quantitative, projecting numerical data from official institutions such as the Superintendence of Banks, Central Bank of Ecuador, as well as annual provincial accounts. These data are complemented with surveys based on a questionnaire previously designed to measure the sustainability of the SMEs studied. Public policies promote the equitable distribution of credit to companies, however, less than 1% of large companies concentrate 53.04% of the credit, while the rest of the business park made up of small and medium-sized companies (99%), concentrates 30.88% of the total credit portfolio of the province, given these results, their success was evaluated as regular. Support programs are undertaken as action strategies to support SMEs, with results that qualify them as good, and in the case of the Credit Guarantee Programs, with a qualitative evaluation of regular. The policies are not adequately aligned with the needs and economic realities of the country, thus restricting progress towards the country's economic development. The strengthening of SMEs can contribute to the achievement of sustainable development objectives.
