Social pathologies and paradoxes in the societies of the South: A reading from the Critical Theory

This paper analyzes the conflictive nature of interethnic and intersocietal relations in the so-called Southern Societies, taking as a reference the case of the Mapuche ancestral territory. A historical and current reading of them will allow us to account for the logics underlying the social suffering experienced in the territory, as well as the understandable struggles for recognition and redistribution launched to reverse this situation. Critical social philosophy, fundamentally represented by Axel Honneth and Nancy Fraser in dialogue with social empirical background, will make it possible to observe the potentialities and limitations of such struggles, reaching the following hypothesis as a conclusion: the struggles of underestimated and subalternized groups and movements are unable to transcend the limits of what has led them to the dehumanizing situation in which they live, although these struggles are inevitable and necessary.
