Participation, Leadership, Cultural Preservation Finzenu of San Sebastián: A Qualitative Study from the Local Perspective

This article examines the processes of participation and leadership, and the obstacles to cultural preservation in the Finzenú indigenous community of San Sebastián in Colombia. The identification of justice issues reveals some incredibly significant barriers. A qualitative research approach contextualized within the sociocritical paradigm was used. Among the results, we found serious barriers in communication with local authorities, a lack of transparency in the use of public resources, and internal fragmentation of leadership. The results reflect a deep mistrust and fear that hinder collective action. The disappearance of the native language and the lack of interest among young people in traditional crafts are causes for concern. However, despite these complications, the key role of the elders and the prominence of women in internal decision-making are essential factors.
