The declared and the intention: An etic-emic study on the prevalence of ethical values regarding happiness in contemporary Amerindian culture. Puno, Peru.

We examined the prevalence of values ??and qualities associated with happiness was examined among university students in the Andean region of the Puno Altiplano, Peru, and triangulated it with statistically measured components of criminal and domestic violence. The aim was to provide evidence of the etic-emic tension in modern Indigenous thought in the Puno Altiplano and to reflect on the culture's difficulty in expressing its most relevant problematic traumas. A mixed approach was used with a descriptive-analytical design and non-experimental methodology, using semi-structured interviews and three-level surveys. The results indicate that the prevalence of reported values ??is directly related to the Indigenous concept of “happiness” ("buen vivir" or Sumak Kawsay). Also declared as absolute values ??are being honest, capable, persevering, empathetic, supportive, consistent, and progressive. When contrasted with the ENDES 2024 crime and domestic violence data, which does not express behavior in absolute values, but rather in terms of latent violence and axiological relativization, triangulation leads to suspicions about the splitting of the discourse, indicating a possible etic-emic tension, as described by cultural materialism in anthropology.
