Abstract

The study analyses gender inequality in leadership positions in Argentinean higher education institutions (HEIs), focusing on the representation of women in rector and dean positions. Despite advances in gender equality, women continue to be under-represented in university leadership. Using a quantitative methodology, data were collected from the official websites of all Argentinean HEIs. The frequencies and proportions of rectors and deans by gender (without considering other genders) in public and private HEIs were analysed, as well as their geographical distribution. The results reveal that 17% of rector positions are held by women, while 39% of dean positions are held by women. The gender disparity is evident in both public and private institutions and varies significantly by province. The discussion highlights structural and cultural barriers that emphasise the need for policies and programmes that promote gender equality and work-life balance.
