Abstract

Artificial intelligence is a very recent technology, but it has a high impact on higher education. Its use has consequences in teaching, evaluation methods, management, and administration of institutions, as well as in scientific research. However, another function of higher education is public engagement, previously known as extension. Interestingly, while its importance and value are recognized, it also presents some complexities, such as its broad definition and its various forms it takes. In this scenario, this article asks about the possible advantages that artificial intelligence would have to support public engagement within higher education institutions. To do this, a research project on the anthropologist Martin Gusinde (who studied the societies of the southernmost part of America at the beginning of the 20th century) is considered and from there, concrete (and long-term) ways are proposed in which scientific knowledge can use artificial intelligence to develop public engagement. Some ethical aspects are analyzed and it is concluded that the relationship between artificial intelligence and public engagement can be fruitful, but arguments that consider as many aspects as possible must be developed within higher education to make informed decisions.
