Un laboratorio es un espacio para probar, refutar o co-crear ideas. El laboratorio como concepto puede ofrecer al museo un marco para ser experimental, basado en la investigación y comprometido con el cuestionamiento de sí mismo. Cuando este marco se da y está impulsado por la curiosidad sincera, promueve un marco ideal para la educación. En 1939 Alfred H. Barr, el primer director del Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York, definió el museo como un "laboratorio". En 1937, Victor D’Amico fue nombrado Director del Proyecto Educativo para cumplir la misión educativa del MoMA, que incluía la inauguración de la Galería de los Jóvenes. The Young People’s Gallerysirvió como un espacio participativo para jugar con los límites de la idea del museo como laboratorio. Este artículo es una exploración del concepto del museo como laboratorio a través del pasado educativo del MoMA, en busca de prácticas socialmente relevantes para inspirar al museo del futuro.
