Abstract

Alterity, the idea of the other, is essential for the understanding of Levinas, while alterity permeates all his philosophy, from it his postulates, both ethical and metaphysical. Hence, the purpose of this article is to analyze how Levinasian ethics allows us to meet the other, not to dominate him, but to welcome him in his authentic otherness. In this sense, talking about the ethics proposed by Levinas does not necessarily lead to theology, since his ethics is not based on theology, but rather has a markedly practical nature. Knowing that for our author the Other is essential, there is no doubt that his ethical postulates can significantly contribute to current social problems, such is the case of migration, of the Other who questions us, while he shows us like a purposeful human face.
